America voted on Nov. 8, 2016 to elect a new leader. Niagara News breaks down the Electoral College, state by state, to show where the votes came from.

A total of 538 seats in the Electoral College were up for grabs, and 270 are required to be declared the winner.

The number of Electoral College seats for each state is the number of seats for that state in the Senate, always two, plus the number of seats in the House of Representatives.

While the majority of states are winner-take-all, where the winner of the election receives all the Electoral College seats, both Maine and Nebraska use a different system.

Maine and Nebraska both give two electoral votes to the winner of the state and one to the winner of each congressional district, meaning the vote can be split 3-1 in Maine and 4-1 or 3-2 in Nebraska.

In 1961, the 23rd Amendment gave three seats to the District of Columbia.

The Electoral College will record their votes on Dec. 19.
